I think about mugicha every day since our retreat together. I’m such a sook about the fact that I can’t have a 7-eleven onigiri and a frosty mugicha after a day of work !!

I always think about something my acupuncturist told me when I was having a hissy fit about accidentally eating gluten: “sometimes health is eating the glorious green soup and taking your herbs. And sometimes it’s going to the wine bar, having a good glass of pet nat and sharing a chocolate mousse with your friend.”

Wellness is what you make it baby!

I love this Laura. I have been missing Japan so much since our retreat. I have been trying to stock up on all the good quality matchas and teas I can find. But I totally agree, health is so much more than how much you can remove from your diet 🧡

One thing I think about so often when I interact with people around the world that there are certain countries (such as Japan and much more of the East, I am quite sure) where health, wellness and a balanced diet based on local flora is a part of the inherited tradition and culture of many centuries, so people just don't 'think' or obsess over their food a lot because they can take for granted that eating the way their elders have always eaten is good enough for health? And in some parts of the world, countries are relatively newborn or formed by immigration, and there's no heritage diet or homogenous food culture as such - and I feel like the instances of obsessing over what and how to eat can be so much more of a spiral, because they're looking at references of health from cultures all over the world and that can be really confusing and crazy-making. I wonder if this is why going crazy trying to be well is a western thing? Although honestly, thanks to social media, its EVERYWHERE now. Like, if I incorporated/consumed health ideas from cultures all over the world as my wellness trip, or even ate food from all kinds of cultures all the time multiple times a week, I'd truly go insane haha. It's so interesting to reflect on this piece and I resonate so much <3

I wish more content discussing wellness was like this - I sometimes find it to be quite ostracising and restrictive. I sometimes think its focused on making people feel inadequate to buy more (cynical I know!).

The idea of thinking less about wellness and becoming more ‘well’ has been occurring to me recently, too. This week I read a piece by a writer who, after 10 years of invaluable therapy since her 20s, now felt that life itself was therapising enough for her. Maybe with wellness, we can do our time and then at some point whatever’s become a part of us takes on a life of its own and becomes sufficient to sustain us, without efforting or energy expenditure? And that the ease that brings us actually contributes more to our wellness?
