This was truly inspirational to me. Thank you so much. I am also learning Japanese, partly as a restorative challenge after having had a stroke. I am still struggling with the physical problems of the latter as well. Your words about being comfortable with not being the best struck home. I am a lot older than you but still, what you said about life’s choices makes a lot of sense. You have made my Friday!

Oh gosh, Japanese is such a difficult language. I studied it for three years in university (including a semester abroad), but it wasn't until I worked in Japan at a full time job where I had to speak Japanese every single day that I became even close to conversationally fluent. And even then it was only after I studied intensely on my own for several hours a night over a period of six months that I became comfortable with it.

I already knew how to read kanji too since I also know Chinese, but it was still really challenging to learn even with that big advantage. I can't imagine how difficult it would have been if I had to do that as well (although I know plenty of people do it).

All this to say...I am sure you are making great progress already! And I personally would like to read more about your Japanese learning process. Back then I just used my will to power through it all with standard strategic learning, but I doubt I'd be up for that these days if I was going to pick it back up again (which I would like to).

Ahhh thanks Jennifer 😭 you must have been so good!! Personally I've found italki to be incredible, I work with three teachers and they all have very different styles of teaching, along with a lot of audio input and shadowing... It does mean my writing is lagging, but with phones etc (as much as a cop out as that may be) I feel it matters less? ...... Except of course when it comes to Japanese paperwork hahaha

Devotional dedication to the difficult. 🤍 I needed to read this piece. So. Very. Much. Thank you! 🙏 I also loved the addition of "joyful" because although it can be hard and feel like trudging through the mud and just flat-out suck... we can still bring joy to it and enjoy it and see the tiny glimpses of beauty in the process and our progress — joyful devotional dedication. ✨

This really spoke to me! As someone who picks certain things up quickly, when I find something I love that I am not immediately "good" at it is such a challenge. This piece was really beautiful and inspiring thank you 💖 I am learning Italian and that is teaching me so much more than the language. I would love to hear what is helping you most with learning Japanese.
