hi all 〰
I can’t help but talk about the weather again.
When you don’t live in Australia, you might think it always looks like the image below, but if you do, you’ll know the last few summers — the most glorious season, whom in our privileged memories, still smells like mangos and sausages and salty air, has looked instead like red skies, tired lungs and ash falling down like rain or dripping ceilings, mould issues and the worst floods in 500 years or more.
To have weeks and weeks of sprawling blue skies and no weather warnings has anchored a lot of us, I feel, deep in nostalgia, gratitude, and a visceral realisation of the importance the seasons, the weather and the earth have on our bodies, our emotional state and our overall enjoyment of this precious life.
I’ve felt it as a soft and nudging wake up call: nothing could possibly be more important than this.
this past week
I’ve been enjoying: Being one million years old and going to bed early. One of the greatest luxuries to me is waking up naturally, and I do not take it for granted. Mornings this last week have been simple, quiet and spent mostly outdoors before retreating inside to create online.
I’ve been reading: I adored this. Because I adore Jia Tolentino and my teenage self was low level obsessed with Karen O. And this too. The line: “you’ve been conditioned to believe it’s more important to appear nourished than to actually be nourished.” made me say omg YES out loud.
I’ve been drinking: this coffee. The tasting notes are cherry blossom, marshmallow and blood orange… I mean?! And yes, I mostly buy my coffee beans from Melbourne because well, they do it better. In non caffeinated beverages, I’ve also been enjoying an infusion of nettle, rose, marshmallow root and lemon balm this week.
I’ve been eating: pickles, because I have the tastebuds of your great uncle Fred. My friend Emma served these up when I visited her house a couple of months ago, and they’ve been on high rotation ever since.
I’ve been listening to: this gentle magic as I prep the playlist for next month.
I’ve been wanting: this facial mist (and I bought it, because I trust in everything Gab does, and she has a very sweet deal on right now, and no, she did not ask me to write about this.)
this coming week
